early years foundation stage (eyfs)

Our Pre-School sessions are structured following the EYFS. During the early years, children learn through playing and exploring, being active and through creative and critical thinking both indoors and outside. Our curriculum follows the interests of the child and is created to provide the opportunity for children to experience the awe and wonder of the world we live in.  Early years education helps prepare children for school and lays the foundation to become successful and confident learners in the future.

Each Friday, we share our planning with parents via email which shows you what the children have been learning in Pre-School throughout the week. This is a lovely opportunity for you to engage your child in conversation around what they have been learning and also can support you in continuing their learning at home.

The EYFS focuses on 7 areas of learning:

prime areas

Communication & Language

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Physical Development

SPECIFIC AREAS

Literacy

Mathematics

Expressive Arts & Design

Understanding the World

THE PRIME AREAS

Please find more information on each area below or you can view the full EYFS framework on the government website.

Communication and Language

The development of children's spoken language underpins all 7 areas of learning and development. Children's back and forth interactions from an early age form the foundations for language and cognitive development. A language-rich environment is crucial; through commenting on what children are interesting in or have been doing and echoing back what they say with new vocabulary added, our educators will build children's language effectively.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

This area of development is crucial for children to lead happy and healthy lives and is fundamental to cognitive development.  Strong, warm and positive relationships with adults enable children to learn to understand their own feelings and those of others. Our team of educators use positive modelling and guidance to encourage children to learn how to look after their bodies, including healthy eating and managing their personal needs independently. Through supported interactions, children will learn how to make good friendships, co-operate and resolve conflicts. The attributes provide a secure platform from which children can achieve at school and later in life.

Physical Development

This is vital in children's all-round development, enabling children to pursue happy, healthy and active lives. Gross and fine motor skills develop incrementally throughout early childhood. Gross motor skills provide the foundation for developing healthy bodies and social and emotional well-being. Fine motor control and precision helps with hand-eye coordination, which is later linked to early literacy.

the specific areas

Literacy

Children will be encouraged to link sounds and letters to begin early literacy.

Mathematics

There will be opportunities for all children to develop their confidence and understanding of number, measurement, pattern, shape and space by providing a broad range of contexts in which they can explore, enjoy, learn, practise and talk about them.

Expressive Arts & Design

Children will have opportunities to explore and share their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of art, design, technology, music, movement, dance and imaginative role-play activities.

Understanding the World

Children will be given the opportunity to solve problems, make decisions, experiment, predict, plan and question in a variety of contexts. They will explore and find out about their environment and the people and places that have significance in their lives.
